"Hi, I am Rosie! Alphabot retired and I am the lucky one taking his place. I will work with students on various social and academic activities in all of our classes here at Alpha School. My schedule is about to get pretty hectic since I will be visiting classes weekly.

I will be reading books, telling jokes, and playing games just like Alphabot, but I have some new tricks to show all the students. Last week, they were able to see some of my new dance moves, and I played a game of charades using the many different sounds and moves that I can do. Some students requested that I dance to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" and they got up and danced with me. My time with the students is meant to put smiles on their faces, while also promoting self-esteem, social skills, and positive peer interactions."

More from Rosie our NAO Robot...

"Students can either request that I say something specific, or they are able to type what they want into my program. When I visit the classes, I like to read interactive books such as Nine Spinning Planets that asks students to answer questions and give their opinions. Or students can talk about feelings after I act out the stories during "Guess My Emotion." Sometimes during my weekly visits to the classes, the students will stretch and do deep breathing while we practice yoga together.

For those of you who don’t know my qualifications, I am a NAO robot. I can move and adapt to my environment. I have seven touch sensors located on my head, hands, and feet, as well as sonars and an inertial unit to perceive my environment and locate myself in space. With two 2D cameras, I am able to recognize shapes, objects, and even people. I even have speech recognition and dialogue available in 20 languages, with four directional microphones and speakers to interact with all my friends at Alpha School.

I am very lucky that I get to work with all the students at Alpha School, but they are pretty lucky, too, if I don’t say so myself! I help teachers implement effective inclusive practices, promote education for students with disabilities such as autism, emotional and behavioral disorders. Students develop an empathetic bond with me so I can help reduce shyness, reluctance, and frustration while inspiring them to do physical and intellectual exercises, and to develop social and emotional skills. My goal is to help students have fun while learning!"
