For families of children with disabilities, summer can be both exciting and concerning. While a break from the school routine offers opportunities for relaxation and family time, it can also bring challenges as students lose the daily structure, therapeutic supports, and routines that help them thrive. At Alpha School in Jackson, New Jersey, we understand these concerns because many of our educators, therapists, and support staff experience them in their own lives as parents, siblings, relatives, and caregivers of individuals with disabilities. Our work is deeply personal. That shared understanding allows us to partner with families in helping students maintain the progress they have worked so hard to achieve throughout the school year.
What Is Summer Regression?
Summer regression, sometimes called summer learning loss, is the loss of academic, social, behavioral, communication, or functional skills during an extended break from school. For many students with disabilities, recovery can take weeks or even months after returning to school.
Why Special Needs Students Are More Susceptible
While academic skills can decline, many Alpha School families notice changes in behavioral regulation, following routines, social interaction, sensory regulation, and self-help skills first. Because many students depend on consistent routines, predictable expectations, and repeated practice, interruptions in structure can have a significant impact on their confidence and independence.
Independence Doesn't Take the Summer Off
At Alpha School, our goal extends beyond academic achievement. Our goal is to help every student maximize their level of independence, preparing them for success at home, school, work, and within their community. Summer offers countless opportunities to continue practicing these skills. Encourage your child to help prepare meals, set the table, organize personal belongings, complete household chores, follow visual schedules, participate in grocery shopping, and engage in community outings. These everyday experiences reinforce the same functional skills practiced throughout the school year.
Practical Strategies for Families
Maintain a predictable daily routine without recreating the entire school day. Read together daily, incorporate math into cooking or shopping, provide regular opportunities for social interaction, and continue reinforcing communication and self-help skills. Consistency matters far more than duration.
Continuing Therapy and Social Engagement
Whenever possible, continue speech, occupational, physical, behavioral, or counseling services during the summer, even if less frequently. These services help students maintain communication, emotional regulation, sensory regulation, and daily living skills. Structured camps, community recreation, and planned social opportunities can further support continued growth.
Extended School Year (ESY)
In New Jersey, students whose IEPs indicate they are at risk of significant regression may qualify for Extended School Year (ESY) services. Families should discuss eligibility with their IEP team before the school year concludes.
Planning Makes the Difference
Planning before summer begins allows families and school staff to identify the skills most vulnerable to regression and develop practical strategies for maintaining them at home. At Alpha School, we believe every student is capable of meaningful growth. We hope every family leaves knowing their child was genuinely cared for, that they felt informed and valued as partners throughout the educational process, and that their child made meaningful progress from the day they entered Alpha School. Families consistently tell us that Alpha School is a place where students and staff are happy and where the positive atmosphere is felt from the moment they walk through our doors. That culture, combined with our commitment to maximizing independence and our team's personal understanding of the special needs journey, is what makes Alpha School a unique community dedicated to helping every student thrive year-round.
